If your child has been asking lately about getting a pony you might want to consider getting him one. Ponies are great pets for kids. They encourage kids to get out of the house and enjoy some outdoor fun. It fosters their interested in being able to ride. They are also great for ensuring that your kid gets to be taught the sense of responsibility involved in owning such an animal.

You just need to be sure that you can get your child to offer his hands when it comes to caring for the pet on a day to day basis. You need him to commit to that first to inculcate in him the responsibility of having and owning a pet.

See too if he is going to be physically fit to ride a pony too. You need to be sure that he will have the right build and the right height to be able to ride one. You need to make sure that he is going to have enough skills to ensure that he can balance himself on top of the pony and that he will know how to ride it even when he is unsupervised.

Once you decide that buying a pony is a good decision to pursue, the next step is for you to determine which pony to buy. You will want to start by considering the age of the pony, or a young child especially one who is very inexperienced in riding, it is best to go for an older pony. Older ones tend to be less temperamental. Since they are mature, they do not easily get excited. Thus, they are better to manage by kids that do not have that much exposure to them or with riding them.

As a rule, younger ponies should only be ridden by older riders. Meanwhile, older ponies are more suitable for riders that are considerably younger.

Do make sure that you shop for the right sized pony as well. It has to be of the right size in accordance to the build of your child. You should not go for those sizes that are meant for your kid to grow into. You need to find one that he can ride at his present build now, and not in the future.
